“Yeah, I talked to some kid producer yesterday,” Hap explained to the party on the receiving end of his Sunday morning phone call. “So we’ll just wait and see what happens, Tony.”
Angel In Paradise was excited, at least Tony Colette was. Playing before a national television audience would be a big deal for any band, but to be able to do so while they were still literally unknown cemented the relationship the band had with Hap. “I don’t know what to say,” he apprehensively responded. “I just hope we’re ready for it if it happens.”
“You have to take your shots when you get’em. If we can get this BASH ball rolling, I’ll put you guys on the coattails.”
Hap recognized the open door that stood before the young men and was positioning them on the crest of a proverbial flume that they could potentially ride on a fast track to the top of the industry. He had initially put together a six-step plan and timetable for the band explaining to them that if you don’t know where you’re going you will never know when you get there. The BASH thing really wasn’t expected at the time of his planning, but now he realized it could very well reduce the steps from six to just one. They had already started step one which was to record the album. Step two was to get an EP out with three or four of the best of those recordings. The third step was to be the promotion of the songs to jocks and media types around the country in an effort to get some exposure. Four was to get them signed to an appropriate label. Five was to put them out on a national tour in front of a name act. And six was, of course, to make some money. However, getting over on a network television broadcast before millions of people would be as good as completing almost all of those steps in just one five minute segment.
In a way, he envied them. They had their lives in front of them, and if they could keep their heads on straight, they would have the most incredible journey imaginable. Rock and roll, unlike any other form of entertainment, was truly the best. You could see the world. Women would adore you. You’d have money to do as you wished. All that was necessary was staying away from extreme excesses that included ego and greed as well as the obvious. That was the downfall of most in the industry. Though at the beginning it never seemed to be a concern, by the time a band reached the top, the foundations were often already eroding beneath them, and the decline was eminent.
